Mexican security forces have killed Nemesio Rubén Oseguera Cervantes, widely known as “El Mencho,” the notorious leader of the Jalisco New Generation Cartel (CJNG), in a military operation in Tapalpa, Jalisco. The cartel boss, one of the most wanted drug traffickers in the world with a long history of smuggling fentanyl and other drugs, was wounded during the raid and later died while being flown to Mexico City.
The operation, which involved special forces and intelligence cooperation with the United States, dealt a significant blow to the CJNG, but it also triggered widespread unrest. Videos circulating on social media showed burning vehicles, roadblocks and panic in places like Puerto Vallarta and Guadalajara as cartel members reportedly reacted violently.
In the wake of the violence, airlines including Air Canada and United Airlines suspended flights to Puerto Vallarta, and citizens — including foreign visitors — were urged to stay indoors under safety warnings.
Authorities are working to restore order as tensions remain high across multiple states in Mexico following the cartel leader’s death.
